An aldol condensation is a reaction between two carbonyl compounds at least one which must have one or more alpha hydrogens in it. The reaction is catalyzed by acid or base with the formation of enol or enolate of one carbonyl group. The so formed enol or enolate then makes a nucleophilic attack on the other carbonyl compond and a new carbon-carbon bond is formed. On protonation, it forms a beta-hydroxy carbonyl compound which on heating converts into alpha-beta unsaturated carbonyl compound with the elimination of water.
