distinguish between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol |
Is it possible to distinguish between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol from IR spectra?
Is it possible to distinguish between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol from IR spectra?
1-hexanol
and 2-hexanol contain alcoholic –OH as their functional groups. Both of them
will give corresponding –OH stretching absorption around ~3400 cm-1 in IR spectra.
If
we look at the molecular properties for both the compounds, it is evident that
hydrogen bonding interaction is stronger in 1-hexanol compared to 2-hexanol.
Therefore, 1-hexanol would give
a broader –OH stretching absorption compared to 2-hexanol in their IR absorption
spectra.
However, IR spectra alone is not sufficient to differentiate between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol.
