Learn Chemistry Easy

This blog is all about discussions on different topics in chemistry and other subjects. Primarily it aims at answering different questions on organic chemistry, general chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry along with biochemistry, biophysics as well. This is extremely helpful for different board exams and curriculums (cbse, icse, isc, wbbse, wbchse, cisce, ap, college board, igcse, ibdp, nios, honors, bsc, msc etc.), competitive exams (iitjee, neet, mcat, gamsat, sat etc.).

Is it possible to distinguish between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol from IR spectra?

1-hexanol and 2-hexanol contain alcoholic –OH as their functional groups. Both of them will give corresponding –OH stretching absorption around  ~3400 cm-1 in IR spectra.

If we look at the molecular properties for both the compounds, it is evident that hydrogen bonding interaction is stronger in 1-hexanol compared to 2-hexanol.

Therefore, 1-hexanol would give a broader –OH stretching absorption compared to 2-hexanol in their IR absorption spectra.

However, IR spectra alone is not sufficient to differentiate between 1-hexanol and 2-hexanol.
